US Lawmaker Moves to Brief White House on Killings of Christians in Nigeria
A United States lawmaker has sounded a renewed warning over the persistent killing of Christians in Nigeria, indicating that the issue is now moving from expressions of concern to potential policy action in Washington.
The development comes as anxiety deepens among US officials over what is increasingly viewed as targeted violence against Christian communities in several parts of Nigeria, a matter that has begun to attract higher-level attention within the American government.
US Congressman Rep. Riley Moore has disclosed plans to formally engage the White House on the crisis, outlining possible steps the United States could take to respond. Moore made this known in a statement shared via his verified X account on Tuesday, PulseNets learnt.
The lawmaker’s intervention followed recent comments by Catholic Bishop Robert Barron, who spoke publicly about the scale, frequency, and consequences of attacks on Christians in Nigeria. The bishop drew attention to the humanitarian toll on affected faith-based communities and urged the international community to take the situation more seriously.
Reacting to the bishop’s remarks, Moore acknowledged the concerns and confirmed that discussions with the White House were imminent. He said:
“Thank you, Bishop Barron, for bringing attention to the persecution our brothers and sisters in Christ are facing in Nigeria because of their faith.”
He added:
“I appreciate the recognition. You are correct—I will be briefing the White House on this matter shortly, with a focus on presenting concrete options on how the United States can help protect Christians in Nigeria.”
Moore further referenced recent legislative actions, noting:
“Beyond the recently approved FY26 National Security, Department of State, and Related Programs bill—which advances US security interests, upholds humanitarian values, and defends religious freedom—the House Appropriations Committee will soon submit a detailed report to President Donald Trump on Nigeria. This will cover verified facts, oversight responsibilities, and leadership considerations.”
PulseNets obtained that the congressman’s comments suggest a possible transition from rhetorical concern to structured policy engagement. His anticipated White House briefing is expected to examine practical measures available to the US government, including diplomatic engagement, security collaboration, and mechanisms to strengthen protections for religious freedom.
By referencing the FY26 National Security, Department of State, and Related Programs bill, Moore also signalled that Nigeria’s security and human rights challenges are already embedded within broader US foreign policy and funding discussions, PulseNets reported.

Lawmakers believe these existing policy tools could be leveraged to demand greater accountability while offering protection to vulnerable religious communities.
Meanwhile, the forthcoming House Appropriations Committee report to President Donald Trump is expected to document incidents on the ground, assess federal oversight, and clarify leadership obligations. PulseNets spoke to sources familiar with the process who indicated that the findings could shape future US engagement with Nigeria, particularly in areas linked to security assistance and human rights considerations.
