Veteran Actor Francis Odega Says Nollywood Movies Have Declined in Quality

Veteran Nigerian actor Francis Odega has expressed concern over what he described as a significant decline in the quality of films produced in the Nigerian movie industry, widely known as Nollywood.

The seasoned entertainer made the remarks during a recent appearance on the podcast Where Is The Lie, where he reflected on the evolution of the industry and compared the standards of filmmaking in earlier years with what is obtainable today.

During the conversation, Odega maintained that the Nollywood of his era produced memorable and impactful movies, a standard he believes has diminished in recent times. He argued that the industry once prioritized storytelling and creativity in ways that created timeless films.

“Back then, one script would give us one unforgettable movie. But now, one script can give you seven bad movies, and that’s not right. Nollywood back then, is far better than the Nollywood of today,” the actor said.

The veteran actor further explained that he belongs to the early generation of practitioners who helped establish the Nigerian film industry long before it gained global recognition.

PulseNets learnt that Odega said he was already active in the movie industry before Nollywood evolved into the global cultural force it is today.

“I was among of the people who made Nollywood. When we started, Nollywood was just a phenomenon. Our organisation used to be called Nigerian Actors Guild, NAG, before we later changed it to Actors’ Guild Of Nigeria, AGN.

“It was after then that Nollywood came. So, I am one of the pioneers of Nollywood. I have been in the movie industry for 30 years,” he explained.
