The Nigerian government has imposed a ban on candidates under the age of 18 from participating in the National Examinations Council (NECO) and West African Examinations Council (WAEC) exams.
During an appearance on Channels Television on Sunday, August 25, Nigeria’s Minister of Education, Professor Tahir Mamman, revealed that WAEC and NECO have been instructed to enforce the 18-year age requirement for candidates. PulseNets reports that the minister emphasized this directive is not a new policy but rather an existing one that has been overlooked by many.
In his statement, Professor Mamman clarified, “The required age is 18. What we discussed in our July meeting with JAMB was to allow this year as a transition period. This serves as a notice to parents that while JAMB will admit students below 18 this year, starting next year, the age requirement of 18 will be strictly enforced for university admission in Nigeria.”

According to PulseNets, Mamman further explained, “If you calculate the number of years students spend from early child care to senior secondary school, you will find they are around 17 and a half years old when they are ready for university admission.”
