WASSCE Exams to Proceed Despite Nationwide Strike by NLC and TUC

Computer-based WASSCE for private candidates starts Friday

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has confirmed that the 2024 WASSCE for School Candidates (WASSCE SC) will continue as planned despite the indefinite strike declared by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), set to begin on Monday, June 3rd, 2024.

WAEC Statement

Mrs. T.A. Y. Lawson, the Branch Controller for WAEC, issued a formal notice emphasizing that the examination will go on as scheduled. She acknowledged the concerns raised by the unions and the broader public, but stressed the importance of ensuring Nigerian students are not disadvantaged.

“The WASSCE SC is a critical examination conducted across all member countries of WAEC. It is imperative that Nigerian candidates are given the same opportunity to participate without hindrance,” Lawson stated.

Indefinite Strike Announcement

The NLC and TUC have called for an indefinite strike to address various grievances, impacting multiple sectors nationwide. Despite this, WAEC has made it clear that the examination logistics and schedules will remain unchanged.

Call for Cooperation

Lawson called upon school principals, supervisors, parents, and the general public to ensure all necessary arrangements are made for candidates to attend the exams. “We urge all stakeholders to facilitate the smooth conduct of the WASSCE SC 2024 during this period,” she added.
