Chief Tony Okocha, a prominent member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State, has expressed the party’s “readiness to welcome” the immediate past governor of the state, Nyesom Wike, should he decide to defect to the ruling party.
This statement comes amidst widespread speculation that Wike, who reportedly played a role in ensuring President Bola Tinubu’s victory in the recent presidential election, is preparing to leave the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
There have been accusations that Wike and some of his loyalists within the opposition party were actively seeking ministerial positions in President Tinubu’s government. Furthermore, the former governor himself confirmed his willingness to serve if appointed by President Tinubu.
During a news briefing in Port Harcourt on Thursday, Tony Okocha, a former Chief of Staff at the Rivers State Government House, stated that Wike has the right to join any political party of his choice. He also emphasized that within the leadership of the Tinubu family in Rivers State, they are fully supportive of Wike as their leader.
The remarks by Chief Tony Okocha reflect the dynamic nature of Nigerian politics, where politicians often make strategic moves in pursuit of their interests and aspirations. While Wike’s potential defection to the APC would undoubtedly have significant implications for both parties in Rivers State, it remains to be seen how events will unfold in the coming months.
