Defection: Why I’m Joining APC — Bayelsa Gov. Douye Diri Breaks Silence

Defection: Why I’m Joining APC — Bayelsa Gov. Douye Diri Breaks Silence

Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has explained that his recent decision to dump the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the All Progressives Congress (APC) was taken purely in the interest of Bayelsa State and its long-term development.

The governor made the remarks on Sunday during the 14th Bayelsa Thanksgiving Day celebration held at the Ecumenical Centre in Igbogene, Yenagoa.

It was the first time the Bayelsa helmsman publicly addressed his defection since he formally resigned from the PDP on October 15, PulseNets learnt.

Governor Diri, who spoke with calm resolve, admitted that his decision had stirred mixed reactions across political circles, but he maintained that his move was driven by selflessness and genuine concern for Bayelsa’s progress.

He noted that while some people might initially misunderstand his action, the true motive behind it would become clearer with time.

“Someone had to make the move, and I did it on behalf of Bayelsa State,” he said.
“I took that decision because I believe it will ultimately benefit our people. Many may not understand it now, but later, everyone will see that it was in good faith.”

PulseNets reported that the Thanksgiving Day brought together leaders from different political divides — a symbolic moment the governor described as “a testament to Bayelsa’s unity and maturity.”

Diri expressed joy over the peaceful atmosphere and mutual respect displayed during the service, stressing that politics should serve as a bridge for growth rather than a weapon of division.

“Politics, to me, is a platform for development — not a battlefield to destroy one another,” he said.
“What we are witnessing here today — leaders from different political backgrounds worshipping together — is proof that Bayelsa is moving forward in unity.”

He further highlighted the prevailing peace, improved security, and visible infrastructure development across the state as strong reasons to remain grateful.

“When we assumed office, our priority was to complete abandoned projects before initiating new ones. That alone is enough to thank God for,” Diri told PulseNets.
“The peace and security we currently enjoy are blessings we must never take for granted. Thanksgiving is our duty because it keeps us united and focused.”

Governor Diri assured that his administration would continue to promote harmony and pursue projects that reflect the collective aspirations of the state, regardless of party affiliations.
