Wike: Impeachment Plot Against Fubara Will Fail, Lacks Substance — Ex Commissioner
A former Rivers State Commissioner for Information and Communication, Austin Tam-George, has dismissed ongoing moves to impeach Governor Siminalayi Fubara, describing them as weak, unsustainable, and largely driven by political calculations rather than any proven misconduct.
Tam-George made the remarks on Thursday during an appearance on Prime Time on Arise Television, where he argued that the impeachment plot against the Rivers State governor was aimed at truncating his chances of securing a second term in office, PulseNets learnt.
According to him, Governor Fubara’s administration has remained people-focused, with tangible interventions across critical sectors such as rural development, housing, education, and healthcare, a record he said makes any attempt to remove him from office difficult to justify.
PulseNets reported that Tam-George noted that the absence of clear, well-defined allegations against the governor further weakens the impeachment drive and exposes it as politically motivated.
He also urged the All Progressives Congress (APC) to step in, warning that the party should not allow what he termed the public humiliation of a sitting governor with a strong performance record.
Speaking on the programme, Tam-George said:
“All I think he needs to do is exactly what he has been doing from the beginning, which is to place the people at the centre of gravity of his administration and prioritise their needs, so that they can see the direct impact of government action in their daily lives.”
He added:
“That is precisely what he is doing — in rural development, in transforming the housing sector, and similarly in education and healthcare.”
According to him, sustained focus on governance and service delivery will render the impeachment attempt ineffective.
“If he continues to place the people’s needs at the centre of his administration, there is no way anyone can justify this kind of political shenanigans,” he said.
Tam-George further criticised the impeachment documents themselves, arguing that they lack substance.
“If you examine the so-called articles of impeachment carefully, there is no specificity. There is no clear infraction alleged against either the governor or his deputy,” he stated.
PulseNets obtained that he believes the ultimate objective of the process is to destabilise the administration ahead of future elections.
“What they are trying to do is to scuttle the administration so that the governor never gets to the point of seeking a second term,” he said.
He also referenced comments allegedly made by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, at a recent local government event.
“Just two days ago, Nyesom Wike publicly stated that if Governor Fubara were to secure a second term, it would amount to his own political burial,” Tam-George said.
According to him, this admission provides context for the impeachment move.
“Everything we are seeing now — the so-called impeachment proceedings — is an attempt to block the governor’s second-term prospects, and I honestly do not see how they will succeed,” he added.
Tam-George insisted that Governor Fubara has committed no offence.
“These allegations lack clarity, lack detail, and lack merit. The governor has done nothing wrong, and the process will eventually expose itself,” he said.
Advising the governor, Tam-George told PulseNets that consistency and transparency remain key.
“My advice is simple: keep the people at the centre, meet their needs, continue to run a transparent administration as he has always done. In the end, the truth will prevail, and the administration will stand,” he said.

He concluded by calling on the APC leadership to intervene.
“The governing party must step in. They cannot allow a governor with one of the strongest performance records in the country to be embarrassed by a few lawmakers,” Tam-George said.
