World Cup: Portugal coach, Santos told to bench Cristiano Ronaldo

Ronaldo joins new club on a two-year contract

The 2022 FIFA World Cup round of 16 match between Portugal and Switzerland is on Tuesday night in Qatar, and Dutch icon Ronald de Boer has encouraged Portugal manager Fernando Santos to sideline Cristiano Ronaldo as the squad faces Switzerland.

After his outburst in public following his substitution in the second half of Portugal’s 2-1 loss to South Korea in the World Cup final group stage last Friday, Ronaldo made headlines once more for the wrong reasons.

De Boer stated to Talksport prior to Portugal’s matchup with Switzerland:“It is not only Ronaldo, it is everything that comes with him. Everybody has an opinion.

“The weight you get on your shoulders when you leave him out… you’ve to respond to that. Everybody will only talk about Cristiano Ronaldo and nothing else.

“It is not about the game you are going to play against Switzerland. Basically, it is about why you put him on the bench or why you start with him. You never do it right, probably. If I were the manager, I would put him on the bench.”

Portugal vs. Switzerland will begin at 8 p.m today.
