ASUU strike: Why FG reversed decision to reopen universities

We’re on the verge of total strike — ASUU warns Nigerian govt

ASUU members are now on strike, so new information has come to light regarding why the Federal Government rapidly revoked its directive to the individual university administrations to reopen public universities.

Remember that the Federal Government previously gave vice chancellors the order to reopen schools.

It had urged vice chancellors to  “to ensure that the striking members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) resume and commence lectures immediately.”

It eventually retracted its prior circular in a new directive, nevertheless.

In order to resolve the dispute between the ASUU and the government, PulseNets learned that opinion leaders and other interested parties put pressure on the government by urging that the circular, which had previously been sent to mandate the reopening of the institutions, be removed.

In response to the ongoing invention by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, a top official in the Ministry of Education who did not want his identity published revealed that “the circular was withdrawn to allow for more negotiation between government and the ASUU following the ongoing invention by the Speaker of the House of Representatives”.
