ASUU strike: Benue University orders an urgent return to classes

The Benue State University, BSU Makurdi administration has ordered an immediate reopening of the institution.

According to PulseNets, BSU and other government-owned universities were closed on February 14 as a result of an ASUU (Academic Staff Union of Universities) strike.

The Federal Government’s attempts to negotiate the unresolved issues with the university lecturers had failed because the union required that their demands be met before the strike’s eight-month duration could be ended.

The BSU registrar, Mrs. Mfaga Modom, issued a statement on Tuesday ordering all faculty and staff to begin work immediately.

According to the statement, “On the directive of the Vice-Chancellor, I write to inform all staff, members of the university community and the general public that the university will reopen with effect from Wednesday 28, September 2022”.

“All staff of the university are expected to resume regular duties from Wednesday 28, September 2022.”

The announcement of the start date for all student categories was made in the statement.

Dr. Kwaehfan Tarmombo, the ASUU Chairman for the BSU branch, acknowledged the instruction when reached by PulseNets.

Despite this, he stated, lecturers would not begin teaching again until the long-running strike by the union’s national chapter is called off.

He said, “that is what we were told but we are still on strike. We have been called to resume office but we are not going to teach. We are still on strike until otherwise”.
