In order to make up for the supposed harm caused by oil leaks, Shell will pay four Nigerian farmers and their villages a total of $16 million (£13 million).
The payment follows a deal between the CSO Friends of the Earth and the oil corporation Shell.
In a statement released by the Friends of the Earth organisation on Friday, PulseNets learned this.
Recall that several issues have plagued Nigeria’s oil sector since environmental harm was done to areas that host oil.
The oil leaks litigation dragged on from 2004 to 2007, and the award came after a Dutch court determined that Shell’s Nigerian unit should be held accountable for the environmental harm.
The 2021 court ruling was hailed by the activists as the first time a multinational had been held legally accountable for the actions of a subsidiary.
“We appreciate this compensation; we can build up our community again. We can start to re-invest in our living environment,” Eric Dooh, the son of one of the farmers who launched the case in 2008 alongside the Dutch branch of Friends of the Earth, said.
