A Lagos State Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) driver, Osibanjo Oluwaseun, who collided with a moving train in Ikeja, allegedly resulting in the deaths of six individuals has been charged to court.
PulseNets reports that Oluwaseun appeared before Justice Oyindamola Ogala at an Ikeja High Court on Tuesday.
PulseNets learnt that the state government has charged the defendant with 16 counts of involuntary manslaughter and previous harm.
According to the Director of Public Prosecutions, Babajide Martins, the BRT driver negligently caused the deaths of the victims by ignoring warning signals and colliding with an oncoming train.
The arraignment follows a tragic incident that occurred on November 14th, 2022, when the BRT bus driver reportedly failed to heed warning signals at the railway crossing and drove into the path of the oncoming train, causing the fatal collision. The victims, including a pregnant woman, died on the spot, while several others sustained varying degrees of injuries.
The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges and has been granted bail in the sum of N10 million with two sureties in like sum.
The case has been adjourned until June 6th, 2023, for trial.
