Nigeria’s Next National Census Scheduled for 2025
PulseNets has learned that the Federal Government of Nigeria has officially announced plans to conduct the much-awaited national census in 2025. The disclosure was made on Thursday, November 28, by the Chairman of the National Population Commission (NPC), Nasir Kwarra, during the 2024 Anniversary of the Nairobi Summit on the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) held in Abuja.
Speaking to PulseNets, Kwarra emphasized that the delay in carrying out the national census has significantly hindered the country’s ability to assess its population needs and equitably allocate resources across its regions.
“The gap in accurate population data poses challenges in tailoring reproductive health services and interventions to specific demographic groups, ultimately undermining progress toward reducing maternal mortality and improving access to family planning,” Kwarra told PulseNets.
He further explained that Nigeria’s rural and underserved populations are the most affected by this prolonged census hiatus.
A Long-Awaited Exercise
PulseNets learnt that the last national census in Nigeria was conducted in 2006, making it 18 years since the country last had reliable population data. Despite recommendations from the United Nations that censuses be conducted every decade, Nigeria has fallen far behind this benchmark.
Initially scheduled for 2023, the exercise was postponed twice during the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari, despite funds having been disbursed for the process.
Impact of the Delay
According to Kwarra, the absence of up-to-date demographic data has far-reaching implications, including stalling progress in achieving social inclusion and advancing gender equality. He noted that accurate population statistics are critical to addressing key issues such as reproductive health, family planning, and gender-based violence (GBV).
“We are gathered in the spirit of a shared commitment to progress, inclusivity, and the empowerment of individuals, particularly women and young people,” Kwarra told PulseNets.

He reiterated the nation’s focus on advancing sexual and reproductive health while promoting equal opportunities for all citizens.
Looking Ahead
PulseNets reported that the planned 2025 census is expected to provide Nigeria with critical data to address these challenges and better position the country for equitable development. As the nation prepares for this vital exercise, stakeholders remain hopeful that the delays of the past will not hinder progress in the future.
