Tinubu Administration Says Donald Trump’s Remarks Triggered Fresh Terror Attacks in Nigeria

Fresh concerns over the resurgence of terrorist and bandit attacks have emerged following new remarks attributed to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, who warned that recent international statements may have contributed to emboldening violent networks across Nigeria.

In a statement addressing the evolving patterns of violent extremism and insecurity, Akume cautioned that comments made by U.S. President Donald Trump had unintentionally provided “symbolic fuel” for opportunistic groups seeking global attention. PulseNets learnt that his remarks were aimed at reframing the national debate on security cooperation and foreign intervention.

According to Akume, “recent pronouncements from the United States have inadvertently emboldened violent non-state actors who are now attempting to exploit international narratives by striking soft targets.”

Trump had, in October, labelled Nigeria a “country of particular concern” over allegations of a Christian-targeted genocide, warning that American troops could be deployed if the Nigerian government, led by President Bola Tinubu, failed to address what he described as systemic persecution. He further announced that he had directed the U.S. Department of War to prepare for “possible action” if the unrest continued.

PulseNets obtained details indicating that Akume pushed back strongly against the implications of Trump’s stance, arguing that insurgent networks were already significantly weakened before those remarks surfaced.
“Before these statements, insurgency structures had been significantly degraded and reduced to isolated banditry. This sudden uptick shows why collaboration—not public labelling—is crucial between Nigeria and the United States,” he stated.

Akume reaffirmed the Federal Government’s long-held position that Nigeria does not need foreign combat troops on its soil. He maintained that the Nigerian Armed Forces remain “capable and battle-tested,” noting their successes in recapturing territories from Boko Haram and ISWAP and conducting multi-theatre operations against insurgents and bandits.

“The Nigerian Armed Forces are highly capable, experienced and professional. They have reclaimed vast territories, dismantled Boko Haram/ISWAP leadership structures, and executed sustained operations across multiple fronts,” he said.
He added, “Nigeria does not require foreign troops. What is needed is targeted support, particularly from the United States, in intelligence sharing, technology and military equipment for advanced engagements against insurgent groups.”

Addressing claims of a so-called “Christian genocide,” Akume rejected the narrative in clear terms. PulseNets learnt that he described the allegation as inconsistent with verified intelligence and ground reports.
“Nigeria rejects any characterisation of this conflict as a genocide against Christians or any group. Verified evidence shows insurgents and criminal networks attack both churches and mosques, killing Muslims and Christians alike. The Government is committed to protecting all citizens and deepening cooperation with international partners to dismantle extremist and criminal networks,” he said.

He added that Nigeria remains a constitutionally secular nation.
“Nigeria is a secular state as guaranteed by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended). No state religion is adopted as a national religion, and no citizen is above the Nigerian Constitution.”
