Wike Warns King Ateke to Stay Out of Rivers Politics Ahead of 2027 Elections
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has cautioned the Amanyanabo of Okochiri Kingdom in Okrika, Rivers State, HRM King Ateke Tom against taking any active role in the state’s political affairs ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The warning was given during a weekend visit to the monarch’s palace, where Wike emphasised that although the traditional ruler might personally favour a candidate in the forthcoming governorship race, he must refrain from open political participation. PulseNets learnt that the Minister stressed the importance of preserving the neutrality and dignity of the traditional institution.
Wike’s comments come amid his prolonged political standoff with the Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, a rift that has continued despite appeals from various political stakeholders urging the former governor to disengage from Rivers politics following his exit from office in 2023.
PulseNets reported that the crisis had earlier escalated to the point where Governor Fubara faced a six-month suspension after President Bola Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers State.
In a rapid political recalibration, the governor later defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and publicly pledged his loyalty to President Tinubu’s administration, including support for the president’s re-election bid in 2027.
However, reacting to these developments, Wike dismissed the notion that party realignment or public endorsement of the president would shield the governor when political activities resume in the state. He told PulseNets that Rivers politics would soon take a decisive turn.
Addressing the Amanyanabo directly, Wike said: “Politics will soon begin. I am not asking you to be involved; please do not be involved. Allow us to play our politics. Remain as a traditional ruler. I don’t want anyone to say tomorrow that you put your hand in it. Don’t put your hand, even though you may have someone you support in your mind. Let us handle our own game.”
He added: “If there is any issue, you call us and we resolve it. But I want you to know that it will not be business as usual again. All of us have taken a decision on what to do. Those who are your children will explain to you the decision we have taken—just for your hearing, not for participation.”
PulseNets obtained further remarks from the Minister, in which he explained why he had avoided visiting the monarch’s palace for an extended period. According to Wike, his hesitation was rooted in a desire to avoid any perception that the royal institution was being dragged into partisan politics.

He said: “You are my friend, but the reason I have not been coming is because of your stool. I do not want anyone to say, ‘Amanyanabo, you have cancelled your recognition.’ Still, I know you would not be pleased if I left Okrika without coming to greet you.”
