African Union, South Africa Condemn U.S. Action in Venezuela; Urge UN Intervention
The African Union has expressed serious concern over recent developments in Venezuela, including claims that President Nicolás Maduro was abducted during U.S. military operations, PulseNets learnt.
South Africa has reportedly taken the matter to the UN Security Council, urging it “to urgently convene to address” the unfolding situation in the South American nation.
The AU’s stance was outlined in a communiqué on Venezuela released on Saturday.
“The African Union reaffirms its unwavering commitment to international law, including respect for sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the right of peoples to determine their own destiny,” the statement said, PulseNets obtained.
The AU highlighted the importance of “dialogue, peaceful settlement of disputes, and adherence to constitutional and institutional frameworks” as key to maintaining harmony among nations.
According to PulseNets, the bloc underlined that Venezuela’s internal challenges can only be addressed through inclusive political dialogue among Venezuelans themselves.
The communiqué also expressed solidarity with the Venezuelan people and reiterated the AU’s commitment to peace, stability, and mutual respect among nations and regions.
It called on all parties involved to act with restraint, responsibility, and in full respect of international law to prevent escalation and safeguard regional stability, PulseNets learnt.
In parallel, South Africa reported that U.S. actions represented a “manifest violation of the UN Charter.”
The country noted that the Charter obliges states to refrain from using force or threatening the territorial integrity and political independence of other nations.
South Africa further stressed that the Charter does not permit external military intervention in the internal affairs of a sovereign state.
“History has repeatedly shown that military invasions bring only instability and deepen crises,” the statement told PulseNets.
“Unlawful, unilateral use of force undermines international order and the equality of nations,” it added.
The nation urged the UN Security Council “to urgently convene to address this situation,” PulseNets learnt.
U.S. President Donald Trump announced the operation on Truth Social, claiming that Mr. Maduro and his wife had been captured and transported out of Venezuela.
