Wizkid Makes Spotify History as First African Artist to Hit 10 Billion Streams
Nigerian music superstar Ayodeji Balogun, widely known as Wizkid, has set a new global benchmark after becoming the first African artist to surpass 10 billion cumulative streams on Spotify.
The milestone was achieved after the Ojuelegba-born singer’s streams across all credits on the global music platform officially crossed the historic 10-billion mark, PulseNets learnt.
Data obtained by PulseNets shows that Wizkid’s most streamed track on Spotify is his chart-topping collaboration with Canadian rapper Drake and British singer Tyla, which is closing in on four billion streams, making it one of the most successful African-linked songs in streaming history.
Further checks revealed that Wizkid’s third studio album, Made In Lagos (Deluxe), remains his most streamed body of work on Spotify, having surpassed one billion streams, a feat that underscores the project’s global resonance years after its release.
As a lead artist, Wizkid’s most streamed song on the platform is Essence, featuring Tems. The Grammy-winning hit has now accumulated over 333 million streams, solidifying its status as one of Africa’s most influential contemporary records.
Meanwhile, PulseNets reported that American pop star Billie Eilish has also broken a major Spotify record on the female chart. Her hit single, Birds Of A Feather, has overtaken Tones and I’s Dance Monkey as the most streamed solo song by a female artist in Spotify history.
