Rivers Crisis: Fubara’s Political Future at Risk Without Assembly Support — TVC Director Warns

Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has been cautioned that his political survival may be severely threatened if he continues to govern without the backing of the State House of Assembly, PulseNets learnt.

The warning comes as the political crisis in Rivers State deepens, with lawmakers initiating impeachment proceedings against both the governor and his deputy, further escalating tensions within the state’s power structure.

Developments around the impeachment moves have heightened anxieties over the stability of the Rivers government, while also drawing attention to the fragile balance of power between the executive arm and the legislature.

Speaking on the unfolding situation, the Director of News at Television Continental (TVC), Babajide Otitoju, said no governor can remain politically secure without the active support of state lawmakers.

Otitoju, who spoke during an analysis of the crisis, stressed that the legislature plays a critical role in sustaining any administration at the state level.

He described the impeachment process as deeply concerning, particularly the move to remove the deputy governor, noting that the accusations remain unclear. According to him, “The Rivers House of Assembly wants to impeach Fubara’s deputy, even when they cannot really point out the specific offence she has committed.”

PulseNets gathered that the absence of clearly stated allegations has intensified public suspicion over the real intent behind the impeachment push. Otitoju further observed, “That is why many people believe this is simply a political game designed to push both the governor and his deputy aside so that the Speaker can emerge as acting governor.”

The TVC Director further warned that history has repeatedly shown how decisive state assemblies can be once they withdraw support from a sitting governor.

He added, “The reality is straightforward. Once you lose the backing of lawmakers, your days in office could be numbered. This is exactly what happened to Balarabe Musa when he was governor of Kaduna State.”

PulseNets recalls that the prolonged standoff between Governor Fubara and members of the House of Assembly loyal to former governor Nyesom Wike has dominated Rivers politics in recent months.

As reported, the ongoing conflict has disrupted legislative activities on several occasions and deepened internal divisions within the state’s political landscape.

With impeachment threats still looming, political observers are closely watching how Governor Fubara will respond to the growing pressure from the House of Assembly and whether a political reconciliation remains achievable.
