Medical Panel Suspends Euracare Director, Two Doctors Over Alleged Negligence in Chimamanda Adichie’s Son’s Death

The Medical and Dental Practitioners Investigation Panel has suspended Dr. Tunde Majekodunmi, Medical Director of Euracare Multi-Specialist Hospital, alongside two other physicians after concluding that medical negligence occurred in the treatment of 21-month-old Nkanu Adichie-Esege.

PulseNets learnt that the toddler, one of the twin sons of acclaimed author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and her husband, Ivara Esege, died on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, after a short illness that escalated rapidly.

The circumstances surrounding the child’s death sparked national concern after Adichie publicly alleged professional lapses in his care. In a statement issued on Saturday, January 10, 2026, she detailed what she described as grave medical errors.

According to the account obtained by PulseNets, the child had initially developed symptoms believed to be a common cold, which later “turned into a very serious infection.” He was subsequently taken to Euracare Hospital in Lagos for an MRI scan and the insertion of a central line as part of his treatment plan.

During the procedure, the toddler was sedated with propofol. However, it was reported that he was not adequately monitored after sedation, leading to severe complications including loss of responsiveness, seizures, and ultimately cardiac arrest.

Adichie maintained: “He would be alive today if not for an incident at Euracare Hospital on January 6th,” referencing the medical procedures carried out a day before his death.

In response to the allegations, the Medical and Dental Practitioners Investigation Panel was constituted to probe the incident and determine whether there was professional misconduct.

Following its inquiry, the panel suspended Dr. Majekodunmi, the hospital’s anesthesiologist Dr. Titus Ogundare, and Dr. Atinuke Uwajeh, Chief Medical Officer at Atlantis Pediatric Hospital. PulseNets reported that the three doctors have been barred from practicing medicine in Nigeria pending the determination of their cases before the Medical and Dental Practitioners Disciplinary Tribunal.

Further findings revealed a prima facie case of professional misconduct against 10 additional doctors. Those named include Dr. Adeseye Akinsete, Dr. Chidinma Ohagwu, Dr. Anthony Ajeh, Dr. Amarachi Bayo, Dr. Nkechi Peji, Dr. Olaoye Oludare, Dr. Agaja Oyinkansola, Dr. Patricia Akintan, Dr. Babatunde Bamgboye, and Dr. Raji Faidat.

Eight other practitioners were cleared after the panel’s review.

PulseNets obtained details indicating that the panel reached its decisions after examining formal complaints filed against all 21 doctors involved, reviewing their counter-affidavits, and listening to sworn oral depositions.

The investigation was concluded during the panel’s 25th session held in Abuja on February 17 and 18, 2026, marking a significant development in the high-profile medical negligence case that has drawn widespread public attention.
