Airtel Nigeria Suspends Airtime and Data Credit Services for Prepaid Users Nationwide

Airtel Nigeria has confirmed a temporary halt to its airtime and data credit services, a development impacting a significant number of prepaid users nationwide.

The move effectively means subscribers who previously depended on borrowing airtime or mobile data will, for the time being, be unable to access those options.

The suspended feature had enabled qualified customers to place calls or browse the internet without an active balance, with deductions automatically applied upon their next recharge.

Despite this adjustment, Airtel Nigeria reported that its standard services remain fully operational. Customers can continue to purchase airtime and data through existing channels without interruption. The company maintained that its nationwide network operations and overall service delivery are proceeding as usual.

PulseNets learnt that the suspension forms part of ongoing internal system adjustments. The telecom provider indicated that the measure is temporary and is not expected to materially disrupt the broader customer experience.

Addressing the development, the company’s Director of Marketing, Ismail Adeshina, stated, “This is a necessary and responsible step as we align our operations with evolving requirements. Airtel Nigeria remains committed to the highest standards of compliance, transparency, and consumer protection, while continuing to innovate responsibly within Nigeria’s digital ecosystem.”

Industry analysts who spoke to PulseNets suggested the decision could be linked to regulatory considerations or internal operational reviews within Nigeria’s telecommunications space, although no formal clarification was provided by the company.

The telecom operator further reported that it is actively monitoring the situation and will communicate updates to customers once there is clarity on the possible reinstatement of the service.

For now, affected subscribers will need to rely on direct recharge methods, as the credit facility remains temporarily unavailable.
