Jimoh Ibrahim Resumes as Nigeria’s UN Representative After Presenting Credentials to Guterres
Nigeria’s diplomatic presence at the global stage has taken a new turn as Senator Jimoh Ibrahim officially assumes duty as the country’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, following the completion of all required diplomatic formalities.
The formal ceremony took place on April 21, 2026, at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, where Senator Ibrahim presented his Letter of Credence to the UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, thereby finalising his accreditation and full assumption of office.
PulseNets learnt that the presentation of the Letter of Credence effectively concludes all procedural requirements tied to his nomination and confirmation by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, granting him full authority to act on Nigeria’s behalf within the United Nations system.
Confirming the development, the Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Kimiebi Ebienfa, described the moment as “a key milestone in Nigeria’s international diplomatic engagement.”
He further explained that Senator Ibrahim’s official resumption now empowers him to represent Nigeria across all engagements involving the United Nations and its specialised agencies.
With his appointment now fully activated, expectations are high regarding his performance and strategic direction at the multilateral level. As Permanent Representative, Senator Jimoh Ibrahim is tasked with advancing Nigeria’s foreign policy priorities across a wide range of global issues.
These responsibilities include advocating for Nigeria’s interests in international peace and security, pushing forward sustainable development goals, contributing to climate change discussions, and strengthening multilateral cooperation frameworks. He is also expected to engage directly with member states, UN agencies, and the office of the Secretary-General while reinforcing Nigeria’s voice in conversations around global governance, economic justice, and Africa’s development agenda.
PulseNets reported that his appointment aligns with President Tinubu’s broader diplomatic recalibration strategy aimed at repositioning Nigeria’s influence within the United Nations and strengthening its global standing.
Senator Jimoh Ibrahim, who has built a career spanning business, law, and legislative service, brings a mix of private sector experience and public policy exposure to the role. His nomination was widely interpreted as a calculated move to inject renewed energy and strategic thinking into Nigeria’s multilateral diplomacy.
Ahead of the formal ceremony, the new envoy publicly acknowledged his family’s support in a post on X (formerly Twitter), stating:
“Congratulations to my family as I present my Letter of Credence to the UN Secretary-General, tomorrow, April 21st, as Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations.”
PulseNets obtained that the ceremony at the UN Secretariat drew the presence of senior Nigerian diplomats alongside officials from the country’s Permanent Mission, underscoring the significance of the transition.
