BREAKING: Peter Obi, Rabiu Kwankwaso Officially Defect to Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC)
Abuja – April 23, 2026 – A significant political shift has emerged ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, as former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi and former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso have formally aligned with the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
The development follows Obi’s exit from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) earlier on Sunday, a move that has intensified speculation about strategic positioning among key opposition figures. Their decision to move into the NDC is widely interpreted as a calculated effort to consolidate political strength ahead of the next presidential race.
Both leaders were formally received at the NDC national headquarters in Abuja by the party’s National Leader, former Bayelsa State Governor Henry Seriake Dickson, alongside the National Chairman, Moses Cleopas.
Sources who spoke to PulseNets indicate that the decision to join the NDC forms part of a broader strategy to construct a more unified and competitive opposition platform capable of confronting the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027.
Speaking shortly after the reception, Henry Seriake Dickson described the development as “a growing wave of confidence in the NDC nationwide.”
He noted that the entry of both Obi and Kwankwaso has considerably elevated the party’s national standing while strengthening its prospects as a serious contender in Nigeria’s evolving political landscape.
PulseNets learnt that Peter Obi had maintained ties with the ADC following the breakdown of earlier coalition negotiations within the opposition bloc. Similarly, Rabiu Kwankwaso had also been linked to the party in recent months.
Their exit from the ADC comes amid internal tensions reportedly centered on leadership structure, zoning arrangements, and control over party machinery.
The NDC, which has consistently positioned itself as a credible alternative political platform, now appears to be gaining momentum with the inclusion of two of Nigeria’s most influential political figures.
Political observers believe this development could trigger further realignments within the opposition space, as stakeholders continue to search for the most viable platform ahead of the 2027 presidential contest.

As of press time, neither Peter Obi nor Rabiu Kwankwaso has issued a detailed public explanation regarding their decision, though sources told PulseNets that clearer positions are expected to emerge in the coming days.
This latest shift underscores the growing intensity of political maneuvering and signals that the race toward 2027 has effectively begun.
