FG Approves Major NYSC Reform, Introduces 11 Career Streams and New Six-Week Orientation Structure
The Federal Government has approved a comprehensive restructuring of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), introducing a three-phase orientation camp and 11 specialised career streams as part of the most extensive reform of the scheme since its establishment 53 years ago.
PulseNets learnt that the sweeping overhaul received approval from the Federal Executive Council (FEC), chaired by President Bola Tinubu, marking the first holistic review of the national service programme since it was created in 1973.
According to the Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, the reforms are aimed at repositioning the NYSC to reflect Nigeria’s evolving economic realities and national development priorities.
PulseNets reported that the Special Adviser to the President on Policy Coordination, Hadiza Bala Usman, disclosed that the redesigned six-week orientation programme will replace the existing format with a more structured developmental framework focused on skills, leadership, and employability.
Under the revised structure, the first two weeks of the orientation camp will concentrate on civic responsibility, national values, and leadership development. The second phase will focus on career mapping, financial literacy, business planning, and access to finance, while the final two weeks will provide specialised training based on each corps member’s preferred career pathway.
PulseNets obtained that the Federal Government has divided the programme into 11 specialised streams. These include the Agric Corps, Medical Corps, Education Corps, Tech and Digital Corps, Legal Corps, Public Service Corps, Infrastructure Corps, Green Corps, Enterprise Corps, Creative Economy Corps, and the Paramilitary and Security Corps.
Under the new arrangement, prospective corps members will select one of the 11 streams during registration and receive tailored training designed to improve their employability and prepare them for skills-based primary assignments.
Beyond the restructuring of the orientation camp, the approved reforms also introduce a redesigned NYSC uniform to project greater professionalism, a new graduation ceremony that will replace the traditional Passing Out Parade, a technology-driven call-up process, and risk-sensitive deployment policies.
To give legal backing to the operational changes, the Federal Executive Council has directed the Attorney-General of the Federation and the Ministry of Youth Development to immediately commence amendments to the NYSC Act.

Speaking on the significance of the reforms, Olawande said the changing realities of the country necessitated a review of the scheme.
“Our needs as a country have changed, and many expect the objectives of the NYSC to also change,” Olawande said.
He explained that the extensive multi-stakeholder review process, which began in 2025, is intended to transform the institution into a productivity-driven platform that better serves the aspirations of young Nigerians.
“For over five decades, the NYSC has remained a powerful symbol of national unity and service. Today, we have taken a bold step to preserve that legacy while preparing it for the future,” Olawande shared.
