A court in Equatorial Guinea has handed down an eight-year prison sentence to Baltasar Ebang Engonga, a former top government figure, after he was convicted of embezzling public funds.

Engonga, who once headed the country’s national financial investigation agency, became widely known after explicit videos featuring him with several women were leaked online. Some of the women, PulseNets learnt, were allegedly the spouses of other government officials.

Hilario Mitogo, the press director of the Supreme Court, told PulseNets that the Bioko provincial tribunal ruled Engonga guilty of diverting funds earmarked for professional travel into his own personal accounts. “The court found sufficient evidence of misappropriation of state resources,” Mitogo disclosed.

Alongside the jail term, Engonga has been slammed with a hefty fine of $220,000, PulseNets obtained.

Our correspondents also reported that Engonga did not stand trial alone. He was prosecuted together with five other senior state officials, all accused of mismanaging and pocketing hundreds of thousands of dollars in public funds meant for government operations.

This high-profile case traces back to November when Engonga was first detained. At the time, PulseNets reported that compromising sextapes of him circulated widely on social media, sparking outrage even as investigations into the financial crimes were ongoing.

Observers told PulseNets that this conviction has further exposed the deepening crisis of corruption, misuse of public funds, and political scandals in Equatorial Guinea, raising new questions about accountability among top officials.
