Cholera Crisis in Yola North: Seven Dead, 71 Hospitalized

A cholera outbreak in the Yola North Local Government Area of Adamawa State has tragically claimed seven lives, with 71 individuals currently hospitalized, PulseNets learned. The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) reported via its X.com page on Tuesday that the outbreak was triggered by recent flooding, which contaminated the local drinking water sources.

The agency explained that approximately 100 people are under close monitoring and observation. In a statement, NEMA highlighted, “The National Emergency Management Agency has responded to a suspected cholera outbreak in Yola North LGA of Adamawa State, affecting the communities of Alkalawa, Doubeli, Rumde, and Gwadabawa.”

As of September 16, 2024, 71 patients have been admitted to hospitals, and over 100 individuals are being observed for symptoms. The outbreak has been attributed to a flood disaster that contaminated the primary water sources, leading to some patients being transferred to the Federal Medical Centre due to overflow issues at the isolation center.

NEMA has joined forces with the Adamawa State government to implement emergency measures aimed at curbing the spread of the disease.
