Joseph Tegbe Denies Promising To Fix Nigeria’s Power Grid Within Three Months

Fresh controversy has emerged over comments credited to the Minister-designate for Power, Joseph Olasunkanmi Tegbe, regarding Nigeria’s troubled electricity sector, as he denied reports alleging that he vowed to fix the country’s national grid within three months.

A statement obtained by PulseNets on Thursday through his spokesperson, Adeola Adelabu, described the reports circulating across several media platforms as a misrepresentation of remarks made during Tegbe’s Senate screening held on May 6, 2026.

The statement clarified that the Minister-designate did not at any point promise to repair or fully stabilise Nigeria’s power grid within a three-month timeline.

“Our attention has been drawn to inaccurate media reports alleging that the Honourable Minister-designate, Joseph Olasunkanmi Tegbe, promised to fix Nigeria’s power grid within three months.

“This claim is a clear misrepresentation of his remarks. At his Senate screening on May 6, 2026, Mr Tegbe made no such commitment.”

PulseNets learnt that Tegbe had only informed lawmakers that timelines for reforms in Nigeria’s power sector would depend largely on technical evaluations, stakeholder consultations and operational assessments within the electricity industry.

The statement further explained that although immediate interventions aimed at stabilising the national grid would commence within his first 100 days in office, broader structural reforms across the sector may require up to one year for implementation.

According to the statement obtained by PulseNets, the proposed reforms would prioritise restoring credibility to the power sector, addressing persistent gas supply challenges and expanding electricity metering across the country.

During the Senate screening, Tegbe was also quoted as assuring Nigerians of visible progress in the sector.

“My promise to this chamber is that Nigerians will see visible improvement in the sector.”

PulseNets reported that the Minister-designate also pledged to strengthen grid stability, modernise electricity infrastructure, improve commercial efficiency within the sector and enforce accountability throughout Nigeria’s power value chain.

On the issue of electricity tariffs, Tegbe reportedly assured senators that any planned reforms would protect vulnerable electricity consumers while preserving sustainability and investor confidence in the industry.

The statement added that the Minister-designate remained committed to transparency, measurable results and constructive engagement with the media in addressing Nigeria’s long-standing electricity and power supply challenges.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu recently nominated Tegbe as Minister of Power following the exit of Adebayo Adelabu during the cabinet reshuffle announced by the Presidency.

Tegbe, an engineer and public policy expert, appeared before the Senate where he outlined plans targeted at tackling grid instability, closing metering gaps and addressing infrastructure deficits in Nigeria’s power sector.
