Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has officially withdrawn his membership from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), attributing his decision to prolonged internal conflicts and unresolved legal battles that, according to him, have severely undermined the party’s unity across the country.

PulseNets learnt that the development was made public in a statement released on Friday by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa.

The statement disclosed that Yusuf conveyed his resignation in a formal letter addressed to the Chairman of the NNPP in Diso–Chiranchi Ward, Gwale Local Government Area of Kano State, with the decision taking effect from January 25, 2026.

In the letter obtained by PulseNets, the governor expressed appreciation to the party leadership while formally announcing his exit.

“I write with a profound sense of gratitude to officially inform the leadership of the New Nigeria People’s Party of my decision to resign my membership,” Yusuf stated.

He acknowledged the role the NNPP played in his political rise, noting that the platform offered by the party since 2022 was instrumental to both his emergence as governor and his administration’s early achievements.

“I remain deeply thankful for the opportunity provided by the party, its leaders, and members across Kano State to be part of its political journey since 2022,” he added.

Governor Yusuf explained that his decision was largely informed by persistent leadership tussles and a wave of court cases that have continued to destabilise the party at both the state and national levels.

According to him, the unresolved disputes have weakened internal cohesion and eroded confidence among members.

“In recent times, the party has been confronted with recurring internal challenges arising from leadership disagreements and ongoing legal processes, many of which are now before the courts for determination,” he said.

Yusuf further warned that the lingering crises had widened internal divisions within the NNPP, making reconciliation increasingly difficult.

“The growing sense of disenfranchisement among members has created deep fractures within the party structure, resulting in divisions that appear progressively irreconcilable,” the governor noted.

PulseNets reported that Yusuf stressed his resignation followed extensive consultations and personal reflection, insisting that the move was guided solely by the collective interest of Kano residents.

“After careful consideration, and without prejudice to the party’s ability to resolve its internal issues, I have reached the conclusion that this decision best serves the interest of the people of Kano State,” he said, adding that the step was taken “in good faith and without any ill feelings.”

The governor’s departure from the NNPP was accompanied by a mass exit of key political actors in the state, including 21 members of the Kano State House of Assembly, eight members of the House of Representatives, as well as all 44 local government chairmen.

PulseNets further learnt that the resignation letter was formally acknowledged by the NNPP Secretary of Diso–Chiranchi Ward, Hon. Kabiru Zubairu, who commended Yusuf’s performance while accepting his decision.

Speaking to PulseNets, Zubairu admitted that the party has been grappling with internal instability.

“I agree entirely with His Excellency on the lingering crisis within our party. Despite efforts to manage the situation, we have no choice but to accept the resignation of one of the most outstanding governors produced by the NNPP,” he said.

Zubairu praised Yusuf’s record in infrastructure development, urban renewal, healthcare delivery, education and economic empowerment, as Kano’s political terrain continues to experience notable realignments ahead of future electoral contests.
