Nobel Peace Laureate Malala Yousafzai Arrives Abuja for Girls’ Education Push

Nobel Peace Prize laureate Malala Yousafzai has touched down in Abuja for a round of high-level engagements centered on advancing girls’ education in Nigeria.

PulseNets learnt that the celebrated activist is in the country to meet with the Board of Directors of the Malala Fund as part of a renewed push to accelerate educational reforms.

During her stay, Malala will hold direct conversations with young Nigerian girls and grassroots education advocates who have benefited from the foundation’s programs. She is also expected to engage government officials and civil society leaders to secure stronger commitments toward improving access to quality education.

Nankwat Dakum, the Malala Fund’s Communication Manager, told PulseNets that Nigeria remains pivotal to the organisation’s new global roadmap covering 2025 to 2030. He explained that since 2014, the Fund has channelled over $8 million into local initiatives aimed at dismantling barriers that keep girls out of school.

According to Dakum,

“Nigeria is not just on the map of our global strategy 2025–2030, it is at the very heart of it. Malala’s return at this time reflects the urgency with which stakeholders are renewing their promises to keep girls learning.”

The organisation, PulseNets obtained, has further pledged a massive $50 million under its new five-year global plan, with Nigeria positioned as a major beneficiary. The intervention will focus on strengthening advocacy networks, increasing education financing, and supporting girls — particularly those vulnerable to early marriage — to complete a full 12 years of schooling.

Founded in 2013 by Malala and her father, the Malala Fund continues to push for free, safe, and quality education for every girl across the globe.

It will be recalled that Malala visited Nigeria in 2021, where she held talks with state leaders and openly urged them to declare a state of emergency in the education sector.
