Nigeria to Deploy 200 Special Forces to Türkiye as Defence Partnership Expands into Military Training and Technology Transfer

Nigeria is moving to deepen its military cooperation with Türkiye, with fresh plans to enhance Special Forces capacity and defence production capabilities as part of a broader security strategy.

The Federal Government has confirmed arrangements to deploy no fewer than 200 Nigerian military personnel to Türkiye for specialised training, a development aimed at strengthening operational efficiency in ongoing counter-insurgency and internal security efforts.

The Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (retd.), disclosed this on Saturday on the sidelines of the 5th Antalya Diplomacy Forum (ADF2026) held in Antalya, Türkiye. The minister revealed that both countries have finalised an agreement that will see the immediate deployment of Nigerian Special Forces for advanced training.

Speaking further, Musa stated that Türkiye has already made provisions for the Nigerian contingent, signalling a fast-tracked implementation of the bilateral military cooperation.

“We have a Special Forces training agreement. Türkiye has agreed to give us 200 Special Forces trainees, so as soon as I return, we are sending them here for training.

“We will continue to do a lot. There will be exercises. The first exercise is coming up later in the year. So, in so many areas of defence, we are going to work together,” Musa said.

PulseNets learnt that beyond troop training, both nations are also expanding their defence collaboration into the area of military hardware production and technology transfer, a move considered critical to Nigeria’s long-term security architecture.

The Defence Minister emphasised that Türkiye’s rapid advancement in indigenous defence manufacturing presents a strategic opportunity for Nigeria to accelerate its own military industrial development.

“Türkiye has improved dramatically in the production of military hardware.

“Nigeria is still developing, and we have agreed that we are going to partner together so that we have a co-production of some of these items.

“Because of that, we will move into training, production, and improving on our defence, industrial production, and exchange of officers and soldiers,” he added.

PulseNets reported that the agreement signals a shift toward deeper defence diplomacy, with a focus on joint exercises, capacity building, and technology exchange, all of which are expected to bolster Nigeria’s fight against insecurity.
