Obasanjo Lists Four Non-Negotiable Steps to End Nigeria’s Worsening Security Crisis
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has outlined four non-negotiable pillars he believes are essential to confronting Nigeria’s deepening security crisis.
The statesman offered the insight during a virtual conversation hosted on Sunday by Professor Toyin Falola. Bishop Matthew Kukah, founder of the Kukah Centre, and former presidential candidate Professor Kingsley Moghalu also participated in the dialogue, which PulseNets learnt focused heavily on Nigeria’s internal security vulnerabilities.
Obasanjo cautioned that insecurity has now permeated every corner of the country, insisting that only a holistic and modern security strategy can halt the escalating threat. He emphasised that strengthening intelligence systems, enhancing security personnel training, properly equipping the armed forces, and deploying advanced technology remain fundamental to restoring stability.
In his words,
“When I talk about intelligence, training, equipment, and technology, I know precisely what I mean. But beyond these, we must develop the right attitude—an honest commitment—to confront insecurity head-on.”
Sources who spoke to PulseNets said the former president maintained that no region must be overlooked in the ongoing push for peace, stressing that the scale of the challenges requires both national solidarity and strategic international collaboration.
Obasanjo further argued that insecurity has grown past regional lines and must now be treated as a full national emergency. He urged authorities not to hesitate in seeking global assistance where necessary.
He stated,
“We are experiencing security challenges across the South-East, South-West, and North-East. This is a national concern.
If our government is overwhelmed, there is absolutely nothing wrong with seeking help from the international community. We are part of a global system, and the world has a stake in our peace and stability.”

During the discussion, PulseNets obtained by sources that Obasanjo also raised concerns about the rising population of out-of-school children, warning that neglecting this issue could fuel future security disasters if not urgently addressed.
