There Will Be Widespread Rain, Thunderstorms Across Nigeria from Monday to Wednesday — NiMet Forecasts

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a fresh weather outlook predicting widespread rain and thunderstorms across Nigeria from Monday through Wednesday.

According to the bulletin obtained by PulseNets on Sunday in Abuja, NiMet envisaged thunderstorms with moderate rainfall over parts of Jigawa, Zamfara, Kano, Kaduna, Bauchi, Yobe, and Katsina in the early hours of Monday. The report further indicated that Kebbi, Adamawa, and Taraba States would experience more intense rainfall later in the day.

Flash floods, the agency warned, are possible in Bauchi, Jigawa, Katsina, Kaduna, and Kano during the forecast period. For the Central region, including Niger, Benue, Abuja, Plateau, and Nasarawa, NiMet predicted morning cloudiness followed by light to moderate rainfall, cautioning that parts of Plateau State remain at a high risk of flooding.

In the Southern states, PulseNets learnt that light to moderate rains would spread across Ondo, Imo, Abia, Enugu, Ebonyi, Anambra, Edo, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom throughout Monday.

By Tuesday, NiMet’s projection—as reported by PulseNets—shows sunny intervals with patches of cloud over most northern states, while thunderstorms and scattered rains are expected to persist in Adamawa, Taraba, and nearby areas. The Central and Southern regions are also anticipated to continue experiencing moderate rainfall during the day.

Moving into Wednesday, the agency envisaged sunshine with isolated thunderstorms in the North during the morning hours. Meanwhile, the Central region will experience cloudy skies and moderate rains, while Ebonyi, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, and Cross River are forecast to have morning showers followed by moderate to heavy rainfall later in the day.

A NiMet official who spoke to PulseNets advised residents in flood-prone communities to remain vigilant and take emergency precautions ahead of the predicted weather events.

“People should avoid driving through floodwaters, secure loose household items, and be cautious of strong winds and cold nighttime temperatures,” the official cautioned.

The agency further urged Nigerians to disconnect electrical appliances during thunderstorms and to avoid seeking shelter under tall trees or metallic structures.

For the aviation sector, NiMet told PulseNets that airline operators should always obtain airport-specific weather reports before departure to ensure safe flight planning during the forecast period.
