Solar Light: Wike Flags Off Light Up Abuja Project
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, on Thursday officially launched the Light Up Abuja Project: Lots I and II, an ambitious initiative PulseNets learnt is designed to modernize street lighting across major districts of Abuja and its busiest highways.
According to details obtained by PulseNets, Lot 1 of the project will extend to Maitama, Central Area, Wuse, Asokoro, and the Airport Expressway, while Lot 2 will focus on Katampe, Katampe Extension, Jabi, Garki, Gudu, and Mabushi.
The FCT Administration reported that the plan goes beyond routine installation. It will feature the deployment of integrated hybrid solar-powered streetlights with advanced 300W Zolar fittings capable of producing luminous flux ranging from 7,500lm to 17,500lm. In addition, the scope includes retrofitting old systems, supplying galvanized poles in new locations, and replacing poles that have either been vandalized or destroyed.
PulseNets learnt that each newly installed streetlight will also carry a smart surveillance module, directly connected to a central control unit. Officials told PulseNets that this monitoring technology will not only deter vandalism but also improve real-time security surveillance across the capital city.
Speaking on the timeline, the FCT Administration emphasized that the Light Up Abuja Project will be delivered in six months, stressing that this move signals a “decisive step towards sustainable urban infrastructure and improved security for residents and commuters.”
