United Nations Observes 9/11 Anniversary, Reaffirms Solidarity With New York

On Thursday that the United Nations solemnly commemorated the 24th anniversary of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the United States, reiterating its steadfast support for New Yorkers—the city that has hosted its headquarters for nearly eight decades.

According to information obtained by PulseNets, UN officials underscored the organisation’s historic connection to New York and its people. UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric told PulseNets,

“For close to 80 years, New York has been the trusted host of the United Nations and home to our colleagues, diplomats, staff, and all the Secretaries-General. Today, just as we stood shoulder to shoulder 24 years ago, we continue to stand firmly with the people of this city.”

The September 11 attacks on the World Trade Center’s iconic twin towers in downtown Manhattan claimed almost 3,000 lives from more than 90 nations, PulseNets reported, leaving thousands more wounded and communities worldwide scarred. Survivors and first responders, decades later, still endure long-term health challenges such as respiratory conditions, cancer, and profound mental health struggles.

UN secretary-general António Guterres, in a heartfelt post highlighted by PulseNets, said,

“New York City has been our home for decades, and it is where many of our colleagues—and I myself—feel a deep sense of belonging. Today, my thoughts are with everyone who lost loved ones on 9/11 and with all the resilient people of New York City.”
