Kano Governor Declares Voter Registration a Mandatory Civic Duty, Targets 10 Million Registered Voters

Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has declared voter registration no longer just a civic responsibility but a compulsory duty for every eligible citizen in the state.

The governor made this known on Friday while inaugurating a 36-member Committee on Voters Registration and Civic Awareness at Government House, Kano. He charged the committee with the ambitious mandate of ensuring that no fewer than 10 million voters are captured in the ongoing nationwide voter registration exercise.

Speaking on behalf of Governor Yusuf, the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Alhaji Faruk Umar Ibrahim, acknowledged that the assignment is not an easy one but stressed its importance to the political future of Kano State.

“You should know that your exercise is a Herculean task that requires diligence and dedication. Your mandate is to ensure that Kano registers an additional five million voters by the end of this exercise,” Ibrahim told PulseNets while addressing the committee.

He explained further that the committee is expected to monitor polling units across all local governments, ensure citizens collect their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), and also liaise with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to make sure voter cards are made available without unnecessary delays.

“As of today, Kano is the most populous state in the federation with high political awareness,” Ibrahim said.
“We expect those who were earlier disenfranchised to seize this opportunity. Governor Yusuf is watching you, and it is only through voter registration that Kano will elect leaders of integrity with passion for development.”

PulseNets reported that this renewed push aligns with Governor Yusuf’s political agenda to strengthen participatory democracy in Kano by ensuring that the state’s large population translates into electoral strength.

In his response, the Chairman of the Committee and Commissioner for Information, Malam Ibrahim Waiya, said the team considered the assignment a sacred duty.

“We see this assignment as a call to service,” Waiya told PulseNets.

With Kano being Nigeria’s largest voting bloc, the governor’s insistence on mobilising millions of new voters is seen as a strategic move that could reshape the political dynamics ahead of the next general elections.
