China Donates $1 Million to Nigeria for Flood Relief, Strengthening Bilateral Ties
China has donated one million dollars flood relief to Nigeria to support communities hit by the recent devastating floods as that swept across several states, PulseNets has learnt.
The humanitarian support was formally obtained at a ceremony in Abuja on Wednesday during the signing of exchange of notes between the Chinese government and Nigeria’s Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning, a step that officially seals the grant assistance.
Speaking at the event, the Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Yu Dunhai, expressed Beijing’s solidarity with Nigeria during what he described as a time of shared adversity.
“We extend our heartfelt condolences to families who lost loved ones and reaffirm our support to Nigeria. Coincidentally, China too has been battling floods, including in the suburbs of Beijing, where we lost over 40 lives in July. In difficult moments like this, China and Nigeria always stand shoulder to shoulder,” the envoy told PulseNets.
Yu explained that the assistance reflects China’s confidence in Nigeria’s resilience and recovery capacity.
“We believe strongly that under the leadership of the Federal Government, coupled with the efforts of the Nigerian people, the country will overcome these challenges and rebuild their homes in the near future,” he noted.
China–Nigeria Relations Strengthened
The ambassador further highlighted the broader trajectory of China-Nigeria relations, stressing that the bond between both nations is rooted in mutual respect, equality, and shared growth.
“I am delighted that our comprehensive strategic partnership continues to expand. Only two months ago, President Xi Jinping approved zero-tariff treatment on 400 tariff lines for African countries with diplomatic ties to China, including Nigeria. This policy will enhance Nigeria’s exports, create more jobs, and boost economic development,” he told PulseNets.
He also acknowledged progress in trade, investment, infrastructure, and people-to-people cooperation, describing Nigeria as a central partner in China’s engagement with Africa.
Nigeria Welcomes China’s Humanitarian Gesture
On his part, the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Senator Atiku Bagudu, described the donation as timely and crucial in addressing the plight of flood victims.
“This assistance is particularly targeted at communities most severely impacted by the floods, and it will significantly complement the Federal Government’s ongoing relief efforts and rehabilitation measures,” Bagudu said.
The minister assured that the intervention would be carefully coordinated to ensure transparency and accountability.
“The Ministry, working with relevant MDAs, will put in place a transparent framework guided by past experience and unified templates. This will ensure that the aid reaches the intended beneficiaries in the most efficient and impactful way. Furthermore, the government welcomes the joint monitoring and evaluation mechanism agreed with the Chinese Embassy, which will guarantee transparency, accountability, and shared learning,” he explained.
Bagudu also emphasised that the support was not just a humanitarian gesture but also a testament to the strengthening partnership between both countries across multiple sectors.
“This is not only a demonstration of goodwill from China but also a reflection of our growing cooperation in trade, infrastructure, technology, agriculture, and now disaster relief. Today’s signing will open new windows of collaboration, deepening our strategic partnership for the mutual benefit of our people,” the minister told PulseNets.

Concluding, Bagudu conveyed Nigeria’s gratitude to China, describing the donation as a symbol of long-standing friendship and solidarity.
“On behalf of the government and the people of Nigeria, we sincerely appreciate the Government of China for this noble act of friendship. It reinforces our bilateral ties built on mutual respect, cooperation, and a shared vision for resilience, prosperity, and sustainable development,” he said.
With this intervention, China once again positions itself as a key partner in Nigeria’s humanitarian and development journey, strengthening ties that go beyond diplomacy into practical, people-centered cooperation.
