US Urged to Sanction Tinubu Officials as APC Chieftain Alleges Threat to Nigeria’s Democracy
A former deputy national publicity secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Timi Frank, has outlined reasons he believes the United States and the broader international community should consider sanctions against certain officials of the Federal Government, citing alleged actions that could erode Nigeria’s democratic framework.
The position was contained in a statement issued on Friday.
Frank called on the U.S. government to enforce visa bans, economic penalties, and asset freezes targeting senior government officials, including those he accused of supporting anti-democratic conduct.
He further alleged that the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is leveraging state institutions to weaken opposition parties in the lead-up to future elections.
According to him, “The aim and goal are to ensure that no political party fields a candidate strong enough to contest with the president,” warning that such a trajectory could push the country toward instability if not urgently addressed.
He also alleged that key institutions, including the judiciary and legislature, are being manipulated to frustrate opposition elements, stressing that democracy must remain a competition of ideas rather than what he described as a “monarchical system.”
Frank urged global stakeholders, including the United States and the United Nations, to act proactively to prevent further deterioration of the situation.
“The international community must not wait until Nigeria descends into crisis or conflict before taking action,” he said, adding that instability in a country with over 200 million people could trigger a significant refugee crisis across multiple regions.
The development comes amid recent electoral developments involving the Independent National Electoral Commission, which, according to reports obtained by PulseNets, delisted the leadership of the African Democratic Congress associated with David Mark.

The opposition party had accused President Tinubu’s administration of influencing the move.
However, the electoral body clarified that its decision to derecognize the party leadership was based on ongoing legal disputes.
