Tinubu Appoints Dr. Fatima Zuntu as NBMA DG to Strengthen Nigeria’s Biosafety Regulation

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the appointment of Dr. Fatima Suleiman Zuntu as the new Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of the National Biosafety Management Agency (NBMA), reinforcing ongoing efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s biosafety regulatory framework.

The appointment, which takes effect from April 16, 2026, is for an initial four-year tenure. The development was announced in a statement obtained by PulseNets from the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF) and signed by its Head of Information and Public Relations, Chris Ugwuegbulam.

PulseNets learnt that the appointment was made in line with the provisions of Section 5 of the National Biosafety Management Agency Act, 2015, which guides leadership selection for the agency.

Dr. Zuntu, a seasoned public health expert and policy strategist, brings years of experience in health systems management, programme execution, and regulatory governance. Her track record in advancing national health initiatives positions her as a key figure expected to drive reforms within the NBMA.

According to details obtained by PulseNets, the Presidency has charged the new Director-General to deploy her expertise toward strengthening the agency’s mandate of protecting public health and the environment through efficient biosafety regulation.

The National Biosafety Management Agency serves as Nigeria’s apex regulatory authority overseeing the safe handling, transfer, and application of genetically modified organisms and modern biotechnology products. Established in 2015, the agency plays a pivotal role in regulating GM crops, safeguarding biodiversity, maintaining food safety standards, and supporting responsible biotechnology research.

PulseNets reported that Dr. Zuntu’s appointment comes at a critical time as Nigeria expands its biotechnology ecosystem, amid ongoing regulatory engagements surrounding genetically modified crops such as Bt cotton and Bt cowpea.

Stakeholders across the biotechnology and public health sectors have reacted positively to the development. Several experts who spoke to PulseNets described the appointment as a strategic decision that introduces fresh technical competence into the agency’s leadership.

Industry observers expect the new DG to prioritise strengthening regulatory systems, improving transparency in biosafety processes, and boosting public trust in biotechnology adoption, particularly as it relates to national food security and agricultural productivity.

As she assumes office, Dr. Zuntu is expected to consolidate on the achievements of her predecessor while addressing emerging governance challenges in biosafety, especially in a rapidly evolving agricultural technology landscape.

The appointment forms part of broader administrative efforts by President Tinubu to reposition key regulatory institutions with capable professionals, aligning with national priorities on economic growth, sustainable development, and enhanced food systems resilience.
