APC Waives Screening Requirement for President Tinubu Ahead of 2027 Presidential Primary
Abuja – The National Working Committee (NWC) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has approved the waiver of the mandatory screening process for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as preparations intensify for the party’s 2027 presidential primary election.
The decision was reached during the NWC’s 188th regular meeting held in Abuja on Wednesday.
Details of the resolution were contained in a statement issued by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, which was obtained by PulseNets. The statement confirmed that President Tinubu has been recognized “as duly screened in accordance with the Constitution of the Party for the purpose of participation in the upcoming primary elections.”
The party clarified that the move followed widespread endorsements and a strong vote of confidence from key stakeholders across its structure.
Reasons for the Waiver
According to information obtained by PulseNets, the APC NWC acknowledged that President Tinubu continues to command significant backing from:
The Progressive Governors Forum
Leadership and members of the National Assembly
Various organs within the party
PulseNets learnt that the committee also considered the President’s prior clearance during the 2022 presidential primaries, concluding that subjecting him to another screening exercise would serve no practical purpose.
The statement read in part:
“The NWC noted that the President has received overwhelming endorsement and vote of confidence from critical stakeholders of the Party… It noted further that, as the incumbent President and leader of our great Party, having been duly screened and cleared ahead of the 2022 presidential primaries, requiring his physical appearance before a screening committee at this time would be redundant and unnecessary.”
Implications
This waiver effectively removes any procedural barrier for President Tinubu’s participation in the APC presidential primary, positioning him firmly for a second-term bid in 2027.
Political analysts who spoke to PulseNets interpret the development as a calculated effort by the ruling party to consolidate internal unity and preempt potential friction ahead of the primaries. The move also signals a strategic alignment as opposition parties continue their own coalition-building and restructuring efforts.
