UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer Resigns, Triggers Leadership Race Ahead of Parliament Return

United Kingdom (UK) Prime Minister Keir Starmer has resigned from office as Prime Minister and leader of the Labour Party.

The announcement was made on Monday outside 10 Downing Street, where Starmer said his period in office had been guided by what he believed was in the best interest of the country.

“Every decision I have made has been about putting the country I love first,” he said.

In his statement, Starmer confirmed that he had informed King Charles III of his decision to step down. PulseNets learnt that he also instructed the Labour Party’s National Executive Committee to commence the process of electing a new leader.

According to details obtained by PulseNets, nominations for the leadership contest will open on July 9, while the transition process is expected to be concluded before Parliament reconvenes in September.

Starmer further disclosed that he would remain in office on an interim basis to ensure a smooth transfer of power to his successor.

PulseNets reported that his resignation comes amid increasing pressure from within the Labour Party following a significant by-election victory by rival Andy Burnham in North West England. The result intensified calls from party members for a leadership change ahead of Parliament’s return.

The development is expected to usher in a new phase for the Labour Party as it begins the search for a successor to lead both the party and the government.
