Ikedi Ohakim, a former governor of Imo State, has responded to the federal government’s protest against Nnamdi Kanu’s release as the leader of IPOB.
Ohakim requested President Muhammadu Buhari to instruct AGF Abubakar Malami to rescind the appeal against Kanu’s release.
The call was made by the former governor in support of the South-East Senate caucus’s demand that the Federal Government free the IPOB leader.
The Appeal Court’s decision to release and acquit Kanu led to the Federal Government bringing him before the Supreme Court.
The Nigerian government criticised the appellate court’s decision, claiming Kanu had previously skipped bail.
Ohakim countered, saying the Abia State High Court had ruled in Kanu’s favour over the claim that he had jumped bail.
“I join the SE Senate caucus in calling on Mr President to direct AGF Malami to withdraw the appeal the FG filed against the release of Nnamdi Kanu. The issue that Kanu jumped bail was resolved in his favour by the Abia State High Court judgment secured by @AloyEjimakor in Jan. 2022.” the former governor wrote in a tweet.
Aloy Ejimakor, Kanu’s special counsel, has urged Malami to remind Buhari of a previous court ruling that Kanu did not violate his bail conditions.
Ejimakor also pleaded with Malami to let the President know about earlier decisions that had concluded the IPOB leader was not a terrorist.
“Mr President: In 2018, a tribunal held that Kanu is not a terrorist. In Jan. 2022, Abia court held he didn’t jump bail. In July 2022, the UN asked the government to free him. In Oct. 2022, the Appeal Court discharged him. The hunter has become the hunted.
“This is what Malami should tell Buhari,” he tweeted.
