2027: Peter Obi Meets Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso in Kano, Vows to Restore Economic Power

The 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, was in Kano on Sunday where he held a high-level meeting with former governor of the state, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

The visit, which drew several political heavyweights, has triggered fresh conversations around possible alliances ahead of the 2027 general elections.

PulseNets learnt that the closed-door meeting took place at Kwankwaso’s residence along Miller Road.

Those in attendance, as obtained by PulseNets, included Seyi Makinde, former Bayelsa State Governor Senator Seriake Dickson, and outspoken political figure Naajatu Mohammed, among others.

Their presence, PulseNets reported, added significant weight to the gathering and intensified speculation about ongoing political consultations cutting across party lines.

There are growing claims that the meeting may not be unconnected to a broader political realignment. PulseNets gathered that some stakeholders believe Kwankwaso could be weighing options beyond the New Nigeria People’s Party, with emerging talks linking him to the African Democratic Congress.

Although no official statement has been issued, the development continues to generate widespread political interest.

Speaking during the annual Kwankwassiya Sallah celebration, Obi addressed a large crowd of supporters and residents.

He explained that his visit was primarily to honour the festive season and show respect to Kwankwaso, while also stressing the urgent need to revive Kano’s economic strength.

“I’m here to felicitate with you on the occasion of Sallah and to pay my respect to our leader. So thank you,” Obi said. “We want to change Kano. We want to build a new Kano. What we want to do is bring back the power of Kano—all those factories in Bompai, Sharada 1, Sharada 2, Bank of the North—we want to bring all of them back. Today is not politics; it is the celebration of Sallah.”

Obi’s remarks focused on the decline of Kano’s once-thriving industrial zones, particularly in Bompai and Sharada, which previously hosted major manufacturing activities in northern Nigeria. His comments, as analysed by PulseNets, signal a continued emphasis on economic revival, industrialisation, and regional development.

The visit also reflects a broader strategy by Obi and his allies to deepen political engagement across northern Nigeria ahead of future electoral cycles.

Kwankwaso, who received the delegation, expressed satisfaction with the visit and the display of unity among political leaders. He noted that the Sallah celebration offered a platform for leaders and supporters to gather in peace and shared purpose.
