Rivers Assembly Insists Impeachment Process Against Fubara, Deputy Is Ongoing
The Rivers State House of Assembly has reaffirmed that the ongoing impeachment process against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, is progressing without interruption, PulseNets has learned.
This clarification was contained in a statement issued on Friday by the Chairman of the House Committee on Information, Petitions and Complaints, Enemi George, and obtained by PulseNets. According to the lawmaker, the actions of the Assembly are firmly grounded in the provisions of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).
George explained that the notices of allegations of gross misconduct, initiated under Section 188 of the Constitution against both the governor and the deputy governor, have already been transmitted to them by the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Martin Chike Amaewhule. He added that the Assembly is currently awaiting their formal responses, PulseNets learnt.
He further noted that the Rivers State House of Assembly remains constitutionally empowered to act in the interest of the people and to address any alleged infractions of the Constitution by the governor, deputy governor, or other officials of the state government. In this regard, he stressed that lawmakers are duty-bound to discharge their responsibilities without fear or favour.
Reacting to reports suggesting otherwise, George told PulseNets that certain individuals and media platforms are deliberately spreading misinformation about the status of the impeachment proceedings.
“We are aware that some persons and media outlets are again attempting to mislead the public by falsely claiming that the impeachment process has been suspended or abandoned. These false narratives are being pushed to create unnecessary tension between the House and well-meaning Nigerians,” he said.
The lawmaker dismissed such claims as baseless and urged the public to ignore them, maintaining that the Assembly remains resolute.
“With the permission of the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Martin Chike Amaewhule, I urge everyone to disregard these actions, as they have already fallen flat. The House will continue to carry out its constitutional responsibilities and will not be intimidated by cheap blackmail or threats from those who do not have the interest of our democracy at heart,” George stated.
He also expressed appreciation to residents of Rivers State and key stakeholders for their support and encouragement throughout the process, PulseNets reported.
“We sincerely thank the people of Rivers State for their prayers and support. We are equally grateful to stakeholders and leaders at all levels, and we extend our warm regards to all democrats who remain committed to the Nigerian project,” he added.
