Ronaldo Injury Update: Roberto Martinez Explains Portugal Squad Omission Ahead of 2026 World Cup

Portugal head coach Roberto Martinez has clarified the absence of Cristiano Ronaldo and Bernardo Silva from his latest squad selection ahead of upcoming international fixtures.

The development comes after both high-profile players were left out of Portugal’s squad for the next round of friendly matches. Despite the omission, assurances have been given regarding Ronaldo’s long-term role with the national team, particularly with the 2026 FIFA World Cup on the horizon.

PulseNets learnt that Martinez, while addressing journalists, confirmed that Ronaldo remains a central figure in Portugal’s plans for the global tournament. The manager disclosed that the veteran forward’s absence is linked to a minor fitness concern rather than any tactical or long-term decision.

The squad list, released on Friday, March 20, excludes both Ronaldo and Silva for the upcoming friendlies against the United States and Mexico, fixtures that will serve as Portugal’s final international outings before the World Cup.

Speaking further, Martinez explained that Ronaldo’s situation is temporary and recovery is expected soon.

“The World Cup is not at risk. He is not at risk, no. It’s a small muscle injury, and we think he should be able to return in about a week or two.

“Cristiano has done a lot of physical work this season, which shows he is in great shape,” the coach stated.

PulseNets obtained that Ronaldo has been sidelined since February 28, when he was forced off during Al-Nassr’s 3-1 victory over Al-Fayha in the Saudi Pro League.

The club later confirmed that the five-time Ballon d’Or winner suffered a hamstring injury, which led to his trip to Madrid for further medical treatment.

In addition, PulseNets reported that Silva’s exclusion was based on technical considerations informed by medical updates from his club, Manchester City.

“Bernardo Silva, it’s a technical choice, based on the medical info that the player’s team gave,” Martinez added.

Portugal are scheduled to face Mexico at the iconic Estadio Azteca on March 28, before traveling to Atlanta for a clash against the United States on April 1.
